The water as blue as I have been accustomed to for the past twenty-three years, with sand as white, as a fresh blanket of snow, minus the colder temperatures. I am home now. I have returned safely to paradise, after traveling 22,700 miles, spreading the word of "No Oil"on our Tampa Bay area beaches, visiting 48 state capitols, and 15 national parks, along with our nations capitol, and some monuments in Washington D.C.; all in 105 days. A journey of a lifetime, that took my breath away, around every corner, over every mountain, and to oceans with 22 beaches not nearly as soft and pristine as ours here.

The magnitude of this adventure will take my lifetime to truly understand, all that I will gain eternally; as my external being relaxes from a long awaited dream. This quest of kindness and hospitality that I have embarked upon, doling out, and in reception of, hopefully left an impression on all ends. The generosity in friendship and sponsorship, known and new, was a huge part of my safe return. I am, and will forever be grateful. I can still feel the warmth and compassion that was bestowed onto me. I can still see the loving smiles of America, as colorful as the foliage under the autumn sun, as I drove from state to state, and city to city, dreaming, creating, and exploring.

Though, this trip has found it's overwhelming conclusion; I will continue to utilize my wheresjohnny blog to share with all of you, why I choose to live here, this place, I call paradise. With each new day, a collection of memories formed the foundation of yesterday, creating steps that will lead me to tomorrow. Yesterday was 103 days ago, and tomorrow is only a sunset away. I ask myself; did I dream enough to promote our beaches, did I create enough to spread kindness, did I explore enough to heal my wounds. Pride in where you live, how you love, and what you give, is an extension of who you are. I am blessed to live on Pass-a-grille Beach, where the white sand entices me to stay a while, to stop and listen to the waves roll upon shore like a whisper from a far away echo, assuring me, that this is paradise, this is my home, where the blue skies melt onto the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and takes me away.

I am anxious for my return for so many reasons; some old, some new. I am looking forward to seeing my friends who through all of this, have helped me see the sun well after it has set beyond the horizon. For the past three months, I have chased the sun as if I was chasing a dream, escaping the slumber of my heart, to awaken fresh, somewhere new. Each day, a new expression of nature, a new hope for humanity, led me down a path of the unknown. How did they, before us, endeavor the terrain without roads, maps, or GPS, and travel abroad in search of something new, a place to call home? I would still be out there on this walk about of mine, wandering aimless to the wonders of this beautiful country, if I didn't have the tools needed for my safe return.

Nearly 22,500 miles later, and I am almost home. Did you know that the circumference of the Earth is 24,900 miles? The distance one must go to find themselves right back to the start of it all, the beginning to an end. My travels are nearly over for this journey; however, my thirst for life continues, as tomorrow has yet begun.

A Watchful Night

An hour has gone by, with me watching the warmth of the fire. It hisses at me; while the fungus melts onto the wet logs. This is my last night of camping, quietly beneath the stars, I find it hard to write through the flames. I am seven suns away until I return myself, safely, back to home. I can't believe how far I have come; nor how close I am, to completing this quest of mine to dream, create, and explore what lies inside me, and the world that surrounds me. A journey I thought of four years ago, while waiting on a friend at the airport in Greenville, SC. The same place I am traveling to this weekend to visit other friends, and the new edition they brought into this beautiful world. I am presently enjoying this evening, reflecting the past six months of my life, asking myself, "how is it, that this fire sends me to a calmness, I, up to this point, have yet to know?" I seem new to myself, fresh to an idea. I hope to push myself more; so to continue my pursuit, to find and follow my purpose. This past three and a half months, I have challenged my heart, questioned my faith, aimlessly, in search of my soul. I am very appreciative the patience I have discovered, watching nature express her ways. I will forever be grateful for the kindness I have received throughout this road trip of mine. I wish you all could see the moon, soft, against the night, as it was leaning back, taking it all in. There it goes below the horizon made of trees, showcased by bright, twinkling stars. They seem brighter, now that they shine on their own.

I can't be too deep into the forest, I hear a train in the distance, it's whistle echoing across the acres of cotton fields. I now, like the moon before me, with my cowboy hat resting upon my knee, am leaning back, taking it all in. I am filled with warmth now, not by the fire in front of me; but the warmth of friendship I have crossed, known, and new to my heart. The fire still ablaze into the dark, rises, as do my aspirations for 2011 and beyond. Every color in a rainbow burns deep within the fire. Keep dreaming, keep creating, and keep exploring yourself and the universe around you.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Kd2RO1zqd4/TODM5MbhF7I/AAAAAAAABS8/zFfTxiJGFFQ/s1600/IMG_8527.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; as I sit here alone upon a cold bench, in Lafayette Park, across from the White House, in our nations capitol. A group of Secret Service Police Officers, in conversation; maybe talking about tonight's World Series victors, the San Francisco Giants, or how bad the Redskins played, loosing to Detroit. I'll never know the secrets of their huddle; probably trying to stay warm as they stand in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue. Seems like yesterday, when I was last here to witness the Parade for newly elect President Obama, this past Inauguration Day. Here I am, now midnight, in Washington D.C. on day 88 of my cross-country adventures, visiting all the state capitols, looking over at the White House in its slumber, only a few lights still visible, shining out into the night, with the American Flag waving ever so proudly atop our nations estate.

I sense a new day of change upon us, a new temporary solution to all that ails this great place of freedom called the United States of America. What truly unites us as a nation? Is it our infrastructure, our highways that connect one beautiful state to their surrounding neighbors? Is it the education of our past, to teach to tomorrows generation; as it was taught to us? Will they show compassion to our generation now, as time ages, will their justice be kind and graceful? Is it our different faiths; that one day we may unite as one , in prayer, globally, and grant peace for all of humanity? To be united, we starts in the community, helping thy neighbor, feeding the hungry, housing the homeless.

Haven driven 20,720 miles since leaving St. Pete Beach, Florida, I have noticed a bit of renovating and restoring of the outer structure of some of our State Capitol Buildings, built many many elections ago. With tomorrows elections held all across America, who will lead the renovation and restoration of the heart of our freedoms? One day, embodied in my spirit, I hope to believe in government for the people, all the people.

To our newly elected officials for the people, take seriously our declining youth. Playgrounds and parks are mostly vacant, empty basketball and tennis courts with broken health and torn nets, decaying in yesterday's wind. The same goes with our playing fields for football, baseball, and soccer, overrun with weeds of nature and human debris. Technology is taking over our childrens playtime. Refurbish our basic past times, and you will conserve the pursuit of health and happiness for our children. As winter nears, warm our dreams of tomorrow, with truth and good judgement today; our unity depends on it.

Thanks to the nice lady who gave me personal passes to both the Senate and House of Representatives galleries; neither a part of the usual tour open to the public. As I continued on to Texas I felt disappointed that I didn't stop to take in any of the sites. I promised myself to slow down just a bit, to do and see as much as I could; so here I am driving north into Vermont, feeling the urge to drive straight to Montpelier and on to Augusta, Maine to speed up my progress. I kindly remind myself of this and decide to stop in Killington, VT at the local Chamber of Commerce, to drop off brochures of the Tampa Bay area beaches and ask what there was to do for someone just passing through. I was directed to Texas Falls located on the east side of the Green Mountain State Forest north on Highway 100. On the map I noticed that Robert Frost's summer cabin wasn't too far out of the way. I couldn't name one poem the Great American Poet wrote; but found myself intrigued. Being a first time published poet, I was, and am even more now enamoured to find out as much as I can about this man who has won not only four Pulitzer Prize Awards, but the hearts of so many.

Here I am walking up a path to his cabin with stones stacked on both sides, about two feet high, that were probably carried up from the stream below in the valley by Mr. Frost himself, to illustrate the metes and bounds of where his heart dwelled every time summer neared. He might have even built this cabin himself; only research will tell. As I walk around to the other side to see what view he might have had, I notice a slab of stone rested upon other stones that seemed to be used as a sitting spot. With the leaves dancing in the wind and sky singing the chorus, I sat down upon this perch; which felt as if someone has sat there many times before.

Not being in a rush, I sat for a spell contemplating life and purpose, listening to nature reach out to me in a way I haven't noticed for some time now. Relaxed and taking in the day, I find myself describing how I honestly feel, writing in a way bewildered to yesterday. If one could only be sitting here where I am now and see how simple and easy life could be.

Frost Upon a New Day

Where and when will I find my isolated spot for inspiration
Maybe it is where ever I may be at that moment
Maybe I already found it
My soul still reaching out
My heart still leading the way
I am at peace within, through exhausted breaths for which I am
Winter nears as tomorrow has already come
Mountains of my favorite hue rest solemnly; as my life is humbled for just a while

By: John DeRosa

How can I understand life if I can't feel it through other peoples eyes? - JCD

Woodstock is Still Colorful

A man walks into a bar a stranger and leaves with seven new friends. It happened to me in Woodstock, NY at a great place called Gypsy Wolf Cantina. What a great name! What a great place! It had me written all over, for I am traveling alone and was craving a beer; especially after a wonderful day kayaking the Hudson River that surrounds the Saugerties Lighthouse. If you ever find yourself in Woodstock, drive just a short stint up Highway 212, to witness human nature at it's purest kindness. The food is delightful, fuego upon request, and the wolves blood sneaks up on you.

Thank you again my newest of friends: Miguel, Jorgue, Jonathon, Marlon, Billy and Jessica, Jamie and Matt, for an evening to remember.

Miguel;Feliz Cunpleanos (Happy Birthday)! I hope you are having as much fun visiting your home town in El Salvador, as I did mine in Fairmont,WV. How long does it take for a falling leaf to become one with the forest of family? This past Sunday, October 24th, I found myself 45 minutes north of Saugerties, NY where my great-grandfather Edward Pastorini was the last lighthouse-keeper at the Saugerties Lighthouse from 1950-1954. I arrived just after sunrise and was thankful that my Aunt Anna instilled the thought of me visiting her birth town. My mother Lisa and Anna lived there for a few seasons when they were two and one years old, only children with memories of their time here passed down through the stories Granny (Florence Pastorini) would speak of passionately.

I parked the Jeep and prepared myself for the 1/2 mile walk hoping it was low tide like my grandmother Agnes (Oma) advised me. I walked anxiously along the trail, the tide low and I was not alone, for many people visit there on a daily basis. The once upon a time lighthouse is now a B&B with a waiting list already into 2012. I was so hoping for a cancellation that never happened. As the high tide receded, the next family eagerly awaited their chance to check-in after 3pm to walk the trail and enjoy their night on the Hudson River. I spent most of the day there as well as others picnicking along the rocks just in front between the lighthouse and cargo ships that still pass by delivering goods up river.

As people came and went about their Sunday festivities I decided to put the kayak in and paddle out for a panoramic view of this majestic structure I only saw in pictures growing up. The stories seem distant like a light breaking through an early morning fog. I couldn't help but brag to every visitor I met of my heritage, and how proud I was that I made this a part of my glorious journey.

I can still feel the quiet sun upon my face and see the smiles of my many new friends as they too took it all in. text-align: center;">

I'm not in Kansas anymore; nor am I in an area that doesn't seem familiar to me. I truly enjoyed the unexpected delights I witnessed as I drove across the country up to this point. I am home now; though home is still a few weeks away in St. Pete Beach, FL. They say home is where the heart is; so no matter what part of this beautiful country I traveled upon, I was home. Presently I am in Albany,NY at Jillian's and the bartender Trevor is making me feel right at home as I catch up on the day in sports and update wheresjohnny.us. Speaking of home; West Virginia lost to Syracuse at home 19-14 and it was the Mountaineers Homecoming Game. Go Figure! The Tampa Bay Rays lost all three playoff games at home and are eliminated from their World Series hopes. Home field advantage never felt so bad. It's not where you live; but how you live. It's not where you play; but how you play.
Growing up in Fairmont, WV was like riding a roller coaster. The seasons constantly changed as did the addresses. We moved around a good bit allowing me to make new friends in different neighborhoods; so when I come home I have some visiting to do. I seem to do the same things every time I come home; as well as eat at the same places (Yann's) with this visit being no different. There was something new to my arrival this time, something within myself that had me more relaxed, more eager to get as much done as possible. I wanted this trip down memory lane to be my most memorable; and it was. I wanted to change it up a bit; and I did.
My first day home I spent kayaking on Rock Lake with Autumn in full bloom as I prepared myself for a book signing that took place at the Marion County Library on Oct. 16th in front of family and friends that were unable to be a part of the one held back home in Florida. An overwhelming joy to present my alma mater Fairmont Senior High with a copy of Days In Collision. The only sadness was knowing that loved ones who have gone home to the heavens above were there in spirit, their presence and love felt. Past trips left me feeling empty when I would return; but not this time. I was able to reflect upon my life the way a tree sees itself through a still body of water; slightly distorted yet full of beauty. Memories of their smiles and sounds of my laughter reminds me that home is where the heart is. Speaking of laughter; my nieces Ashley,Keelie, and Zuriah brought me back to my childhood days of playing outside, getting dirty with no regard coming inside just in time to get ready for bed. I truly enjoyed every second. You girls be safe and clean your rooms. I stayed at Sis and Billy Reid's place the rest of the time making their home my home while in town. My sister Elsie's ashes are spread on top of the hill there where the deer and wild turkeys roam freely like the wind year round. I never felt closer to her than I do now as if we were little kids again. My inner child really stood out every morning when Lucky Dog would wake me up for a game of fetch with a frisbee that has seen better days. So; no matter your age we all must DREAM-CREATE-EXPLORE in order to feel like we once did when we too were younger, healthier, and innocent. Whether it be a yellow brick road, a plush sandy beach, or even a pothole invested street; remember, there is no place like home, there is no place like home, there is no place like home.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_6Kd2RO1zqd4/TMOqRegPGsI/AAAAAAAABHo/03K5h18s0aI/s1600/IMG_6545.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; The beauty I have witnessed across this great land of ours is indescribable at times; whether it be by photograph, memory, or words I utter on paper. I have driven nearly 18,000 miles, 33 state capitols, and 13 national parks, and have come to the realization that unity is based on trust, the belief that together we can change the world; even if the world seems unchangeable. Each effort, every prayer, from all individual participants regardless of religion, nationality, race, or gender can and does make a difference.
I was at my friends' wedding this past Sunday held on the rooftop of the Ravel Hotel overlooking the skyline of Manhattan to share in their unity of holy matrimony. The gathering of both individuals family and friends brought joy to this unification of love, this collaboration of happiness, becoming one, becoming a team. A team can experience many hardships together throughout the course of a season. Earlier I was watching the Tampa Bay Rays play the Texas Rangers in an elimination game in St. Petersburg, FL with the winner advancing to play the New York Yankees. Being down 3-1 in the ninth I thought the Rays were out hustled up to this point between the bases, and they were. What I didn't notice was another game being shown on CNN now had my full attention instead of the MLB Playoffs.
The first of 33 miners trapped in a Chilean mine was about to be hoisted up 2,300ft (nearly 1/2 a mile) in a capsule just barely big enough for an average human being to be re-united with the world for the first time in 69 days, united with their family and friends. So when someone noticed a few tears rolling down my cheeks; they replied "it is only a game""why the sad tears". Those were tears of joy for the miners and their loved ones who never gave up hope; never stopped believing.
Life isn't a game! There are so many differences across this great land of ours, some political, some religious, and some based on morality, beliefs, cultures, and upbringings. The one thing we all have in common as the people is our freedoms; though we tend to disagree in what manner at times. Every household, street, block, neighborhood, township, city, metropolis, county and state is incorporated on the basis of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Along this journey of mine I have witnessed wealth and poverty like day to night, families picnicking together and homelessness in the same parks. Does it go unnoticed or deliberately ignored? When did the communities stop being neighborly, stop caring, stop being fair. Remember, we are all the nucleus of our freedoms. Is it too late to get involved, too late to do the right thing. At what age do we start teaching the children to preserve their own freedoms? I myself have to work on getting involved more. Together, if we all work together, not only do we build character personally; but as a nation. I hope all is well in the universe of living, laughing, and loving; a combination of great health, happiness, and spiritual being. I am safe in sound in wonderful Memphis, Tennessee relaxing with my family of friends at the Haddad household. The weather is just ideal for the 2nd day of October bringing with it a freshness of a new season in harvesting the past; gathering our thoughts and emotions and storing them in our hearts. I am presently taking the weekend off to catch up on my rest and allow myself to take the past 56 days in. I have torn off the left page of my atlas, folded it and put it away. That part of the journey completed as I reflect back to the wild west. As I drove over the Mississippi River last night I realized that I was home. I was somewhere that I was familiar with; somewhere safe. Looking down at the odometer for the past fifty miles anticipating the trip-o-meter to roll over to all zeros brings back the excitement I have experienced so far. I have come so far since August 6th. I have traveled so far across this glorious place of freedom. Free to roam about this great land of ours and see things that I have only seen in books or heard through other peoples journey's. So here I am 26 state capitols into my own journey, 9 National Parks, having stopped by many monuments and historical landmarks, crossed many rivers, driven along vast lakes, and cruised up most of the coast of the Pacific Ocean's bounty of blue, having the time of my life. I have seen trees as big as the sky would allow, witnessed life as raw as only nature can provide, and climbed mountains as mysterious as their myths. There we go; all zeros, I have officially completed 3/4 of the drive as the odometer rolls over for the 15th time. Wow! 15,000 miles as I crossed over my muddy friend with the lights of the blues shining along the bluffs just in front of me. My adventures will continue Monday as I do rest and enjoy my time here in Memphis. I will be adding more photos as well as stories and introducing some flashbacks now that I am back in civilization; though I must say I miss the leisure the west side of the Mighty Mississippi. Thank you to all of you who have taken me in and opened your homes and hearts to me, for showing me the best of where you live. Thanks for all the provisions that have provided fresh memories every time I indulged. I am forever graceful and hope to return the kindness one day.

Love Johnny

Glimpse of Yellowstone

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; as if it was calling out to me. I stop and take a few photos and am amazed at its tone. I drive a little further and stop again to take a few more photos. I'm on my way to Boise, Idaho via Ketchum to Stanley driving up Idaho 75 in no hurry; though I am in a rush to get somewhere so that I could get cleaned up for it has been 4 days since my last shower. There I go again turning around for that one shot at a once in a lifetime view of beauty.

So, I am now going down this dirt road that I found curious just a moment ago and it leads me to a stream. Along the waters edge are some rocks forming a circle used for fire from previous campers, the charred remains attract me to start a fire of my own. The fire is blazing and cracking now with a can of clam chowder heating upon the flames. It shall be ready soon!

Now I'm standing here a pure naturalists with only my flip-flops and nothing but a smile looking out at this stream (my bath) that flows beneath this beautiful mountain.

More to come....

Civilization

It has been some time since I have updated my blog. My last entry had me in Portland. Hello Cheyne family! Continuing north from Oregon I made a visit to Mt. St. Helens to the heart of the blast zone. Life is coming back to the region slowly; it has been thirty years now and you can still see the effects of the eruption. Afterward I headed for Olympia, Washington's State Capitol sponsored by: Thorpe Chiropractic & Rehab Center. Then it was off to the Pacific Ocean one last time to compare yet another beach and test it's plushness of sand to ours back in paradise. Would you believe that as many shells that wash ashore on our beach is equal to the amount of rocks that wash ashore on Ruby Beach. Not one shell; all rocks finely grinded down over many tides. I completed my cruise up the coast on Historic 101 around Mt. Olymus and then took a ferry boat from Kingston to Everett with yet another peaceful sunset on my way to Seattle. Guess what! It rained while I was in Seattle every day at one point and to my recollection this didn't seem to bother those of the mysterious city. I am quite pleased that I got to visit some friends while in town and meet a couple of new ones. Chris, Thanks for your hospitality and taking me to Palmer's. Go Rays by the way! Brian and Cory, thanks for your hospitality as well. Ryan and Bre, always nice to see you guys. Give Sasha some loving for me. I got to see the guys throw some fish and was unsuccessful at getting a photo of one in mid air. I either must return to Seattle or upgrade to a newer and faster camera. I didn't get shanghaied or buy an umbrella; nor have a cup of coffee at the original Starbuck's. It was right there. I was intrigued is all. On my way out of town I stop to visit one of my brothers Pete. It has been a while though it seems like yesterday. Good to see you.

Next stop was Helena, Montana sponsored by Getter Done Parking located across the street from the Undertow Beach Bar when the city allows. The Undertow is of no affiliation to Getter Done Parking; just pull up and say GETTERDONE. Now comes Yellowstone Park accompanied with a drive along the Lewis & Clark Trail. Two days of elk, bison, geysers, deer, paint pots, wildfires, waterfalls, all types of birds, pines, and flowers. I drove the hole loop of 160 miles and didn't see one bear
(hey BooBoo) or moose (hey Rocky). The same for Grand Teton National Park; everything but a grizzly or a moose. Jenny Lake was an incredible experience. Thanks Don for the recommendation. After a visit to Jackson Hole and a walk around town on their wooden plank sidewalks and through the arches made of elk antlers, celebrated since 1960; I was off driving again heading west again to Boise Idaho. Getting their passing through the Craters of the Moon, then Ketchum. Dean and Leslie Brewin! You two!! Thanks for calling the Sawtooth Club and having them take care of me. It was too cool to be some where you have spoken passionately about. And the fact that Ernest Hemingway frequented the Sawtooth Club back in his heyday made it even more intriguing for me. The next day I visited his home in Ketchum and his eternal resting spot. Okay, now I am headed to Boise; but wait. What is this? A campsite on a lake that isn't crowded and rests under a few glacier mountains. Wait! What's this? I pull into the campground reaching 10,000 miles for my journey. It's settled. I must stay and celebrate. A little kayaking, cutting of the wood, and a little dinner by the fire and under a full moon and a finishing off of a fine bottle of Chivas. I rarely drink scotch; thanks Ryan. So the next morning I actually make it to Boise. Beautiful State Capitol, a five tier dome with a huge rotunda. It's a shame that this building was the only artsy construction I noticed. Their college football team is ranked third in the country and I didn't see one banner of support. Go figure!

Boise Idaho is being sponsored in the memory of Ma Barker (Helen)-You have two potatoes-

Presently I am sitting in a cafe in Salt Lake City called Nostalgia trying to catch up with all that I have done this past week out in the wilderness. State Capitol Building tomorrow, a visit to the lake; then it is off to visit Marrit in Vail, Colorado. Are you paying attention to the state capitols Clayton Louie? I'm quizzing you when I get back and do a little show and tell with you. Be a good boy. Uncle John loves you. That goes for you too Keelie and Buttercup! We must preserve tomorrow for the little ones! It is such a beautiful place of exploration.

Dream-Create-Explore
More to come

Johnny

Weekend of Whistleblowing

Another weekend of football and I am positive that I will be scrambling for scores and updates. I know if I was back home I would be watching the West Virginia game with Scotty, maybe even Lil Bubba at the Undertow Beach Bar eating some wings and catching some island vibes with Glenn and Positive. I can hear those still drums beating across the country as I type. Now a lot of you might be planning to BBQ at home; so don't forget to go to Shaner's Land and Sea for all your supplies. There are other options up and down the beach to catch the games as well; from Sea Hags down to Riptides, then Sloppy Pelican and then the Wharf where you can get an ice cold Evander Beer. Now remember to call for your Free Beach Ride to accommodate you all safely to your destinations. For those of you who may not be sports fans take advantage of the beaches; maybe lunch or dinner at Brass Monkey or Sea Critters; both located on Pass-a-grille. If you decide to take a drive to Downtown St. Pete; stop and visit The Morean Art Center located at 719 Central Avenue or The Chihuly Collection at 400 Beach Drive. Regardless what you choose to do this football weekend have fun and be safe. Pick up The Island Reporter or The Paradise News for other great ideas. Enjoy Paradise! It is cold a lot of other places.

Let's gooooo Mountaineers!! Go Bucs!! Go Rays!!Go Steelers!!

P.S.- It is Scotty Bowers 40th Birthday on Monday. Not knowing how long I was staying I just went with the flow. It was nice to sleep in a bed for the first time in a week. My sleeping buddy Ollie (boxer) snores louder than I do; but that did not deter me from sound rest. I relaxed on Friday and caught up with my laundry. On Saturday we all went downtown to the farmers market held along the riverfront and three city blocks; which is listed as one of the largest markets in the country. The weather was an added warmth that brought out the friendliness of Portland along with some great arts and crafts, food, and entertainment it all made for a fun day. The only down fall was the homeless who are welcomed in Portland; though they went about it politely. After the market we walked to Powell's Book Store. This place was huge, one whole city block with three different levels. Books galore. We drove up to Counsel Crest afterward for a view of Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens both about 60 miles away. I now am fascinated with these volcanic glaciers and must get a closer look. The adults went out for a night on the town going to some wild and fascinating bars. Evander Beer would go over well here. Over a couple of beers at BOG Trevor offers a trip to Mt. Hood and a drive back through the Gorge along the Columbia River. The same river that Lewis and Clark navigated on their way to the Pacific's blue wonder. So; on Sunday after the Buccaneers victory off we went. It was a pure joy to be the passenger for a change and sit back and take it all in. Thanks again Trevor and Christy for opening your home to me and treating me with such kindness. Adie, thanks for the bottlecat charm and Max for the Batman sticker. I will see you guys soon in sunny St. Pete Beach. On Monday I packed up and off to Mt. St. Helens I went.

                       Lewis and Clark Trail

Driving Thru the Redwoods

Like a Glove! As cheesy as it looks I went through three times. I have been out in the wilderness too long. Actually; I am enjoying the great outdoors very much. A bit more daring with each stop. After my weekend at Yosemite I headed back to San Fransisco to grab a shower at my friends and literally am out the door ready to go in minutes. Four hours of daylight left and I have yet to gaze upon a giant Redwood. Thanks again Sean and Trina!

Just north of the Golden Gate Bridge is John Muir Park where lies a few Redwoods. Comparable to the larger parks further north; I wanted to see these beauties in masses. Passed right on by continuing on up the coast driving close to night fall. When morning arrived I found myself camped near

The Avenue of the Giants. A 16 mile drive through the Redwoods. This is where I find thee tree. I walked past it at first as if I wasn't suppose to look at it; as if it had a disease, or a deformity. Like most trees laying around in the forest this one too burned through at the base. So here I am standing inside this tree being one with the tree. Strong roots is the key to it's survival, the key to any ones survival. I feel really small at this point; physically and emotionally. The sky cries for both of us; as rain trickles down through the foliage high above. As I walk back down the path that brought me here; I look back one last time at this tree and it's place in the forest realizing now that its hardships has made it stronger than ever. Adversity at it's finest proving once again life continues. Ugliness is beautiful if you look deep within.

YOSEMITE

Olmsted Point was an absolute joy; to arrive at the park just in time for sunset was better yet. As soon as I got there the group that pulled up beside me was pointing at the stickers on the jeep and asking questions about the oil situation back home in Florida. After our discussion I passed out some brochures on the area and awarded them with a $100 Undertow gift card. In return they rewarded me with a Bass beer. Perfect for sunset! As they moved on I climbed the hill behind me for a better perch to take some photos and bask in all my freedoms.

I awoke the next morning at the end of the ahwahnee (valley in Miwok) looking up out of a box of granite abstract as the firs that cascade the cliffs above me. No plans; so I hop on the bike and allow it to find a path and take me away. Five miles later I lock up and start hiking up a trail that says Vernal Falls. Almost a mile up and I'm starting to wonder where the waterfall is. Now the trail turns into steps up the otherside of the hill. I lost count after 300 or so when the crest of the falls came into view.

Labor Day weekend and here I am laboring up this hill. All well worth this photo alone:

The hike back didn't take long at all since it was mostly all down hill. The bike ride back to the jeep is a different story. So much of nature right there for the taking; so I took in as much as I could just riding around. Once I made it to the jeep I loaded up and was in search of a pine cone. Not just any pine cone. I decided to head south to Mariposa Grove and visit the Giant Sequoia Trees. Success! Pine cone heaven I tell you.

I found three worth taking and headed north again to catch the sunset this time on top of Glacier Point. I am directly above where I awoke earlier this morning. I would have to drive 32 miles just to get 8,000 feet below. The view is of the east with the changing of colors upon the cliff base of Half-Dome. The whole ahwahnee soaked in the last of the sun as the trees and the mountains faded into the night. As people started heading back to their camps; I headed to the jeep to grab a quilt my great-grandmother made and a water bottle with half filled scotch (Thanks Ryan) to keep me warm underneath the audience of stars.

In the morning I picked my self off the huge rock that was my bed for the evening and decided to say good by to YOSEMITE. After my visits in Sacramento, Ca. and Carson City, NV; I decided to head south to Yosemite National Park to take in some outdoor activities. Knowing there is no where to kayak in Yosemite I decided to drop in about a mile out and take the stream down to the lake. Not only was there no charge to do so (parking or drop in fee) the paddle down stream was amazing and a lot easier than the paddle back up stream. After a great BBQ in the back yard we spoke of my journey; but mostly we just caught up and reminessed about the good old days back on St. Pete Beach in the early nineties.
